In Step

St. John’s Wood High Street from the flat above the bank. Around the time this watercolour was painted, the Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher did a walkabout in St. John’s Wood High Street. The artist watched her walkabout at close range from the same window. The King’s Troop Royal Horse Artillery, whose barracks were nearby in Ordnance Hill paraded on horseback down the high street every year in June on their way to the Trooping of the Colour on Horse Guards Parade near St. James’s Park. St. John’s Wood Barracks was vacated in 2012 to move to Woolwich after 200 years of being located in St. John’s Wood. It was moved to make way for a housing development.
