Volver 88

Volver is the name of a Tango Cancion written by Carlos Gardel in 1935. The song is about the poignant return of a man to his home in the hope and the fear that he may find his first love still there. Laura learned this song during her mother’s last illness. While she was painting the picture she described it to her mother and asked her what she thought it should be called. Her mother replied, “Eighty-eight”. Since eighty-eight could be viewed as a symbol for parallel infinities, Laura felt it was a fitting name for a painting that represented her parents. The items in the picture belonged to them. The vase represents her mother and the lamp represents her father; the lamp shedding the light that we are all hopefully traveling towards.
