Laura painted this watercolour over 12 days in late October in Condom, France. The weather was quite chilly and when it started to rain after a couple of days the proprietor of her hotel kindly offered the use of one of the parasols with a stone base that they used to shield the patrons sitting outside from the sun. It was made of cloth and soon the rain was pouring through, so a small van was parked with its back doors open and she painted inside it, sheltered from the weather. The tree on the left hand side of the painting is a Horse Chestnut tree and the tree on the right hand side is an edible Chestnut tree.
